Self-Care Covenant Workshop: Summary
December 4-5, 2008

Event Invitation

You are invited to participate in a Servant Leadership Self-Care Covenant workshop hosted by the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits, December 4-5, 2008 at the Renaissance Chicago O’Hare Suites Hotel in Chicago, Illinois.

The goal of the Servant Leadership Self-Care workshop experience is for participants (you) to make a health covenant improving one or more aspects of your physical, mental-emotional, social or spiritual health.

Our goal is for you to:

  • Experience the Servant Leadership Self-Care workshop and the impact it can have on your health and well-being,
  • Consider the Servant Leadership Self-Care workshop as a program opportunity you may wish to offer to your local church congregation or the clergy in your conference,
  • Enlist other passionate leaders in your congregation or conference to attend and experience the Servant Leadership workshop and then have all of you...
  • Attend a “Train the Trainer” session in March, 2009 so you and the other passionate leaders in your conference / congregation can lead the workshop and help improve the health and well-being of the clergy and laity in your own annual conference.

Servant Leadership Self-Care Workshop—What Is It?

As leaders within The UMC, we are constantly faced with choices that either enhance or detract from overall health and well-being. When we are not healthy in body, mind, and spirit, we are less than what God intended us to be, and less available to do the work to which God called us. Participants (you) will experience a private journey of self-assessment in all aspects of health, leaving with a self-care covenant and plan for improvement.

The Servant Leadership Self-Care workshop format was developed and tested in the Kansas conferences. The General Board of Pension and Health Benefits has recently been licensed as the official distributor of this workshop by the Kansas United Methodist Health Ministry Fund in Hutchinson, Kansas.

This workshop is led by:

Judy Johnston, MS, RD/LD, Research Instructor, Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita

Suzanne Hawley, Ph.D., MPH, Program Director, Kansas Public Health Leadership Institute.

The Self-Care Covenant workshop begins at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4 and concludes on Friday, December 5, 2008 at 2:30 p.m.
